10.5 weeks post TPLO explant

It's been a bit of a roller coaster since Winston got his hardware removed.  He has had kind of a rough time and I questioned the decision more than once.  At the same time, I really don't think the main problem is the hardware or the removal.  He's just a big guy and he's got arthritis and it's just going to get worse over time.

He's on pain pills for the rest of his life, and some days seem to be better (or worse) than others.  Yesterday was one of those days, and today there's some lingering soreness.

At the same time, he's a pretty happy dog and he gets to play and he can go for "normal" walks and life is getting back to normal for us.  I just think the definition of "normal" is slightly different now than it was before.

  1. wow wow wow...i just came across your blog as I was researching recovery experiences for the tightrope procedure. Our dog Bohdi (a 90lb American Bulldog/Pitbull mix) just had surgery done on Wednesday.Bohdi is 8 years old, and injured the knee exiting the pool from what we can tell. The vet says his other knee looks fine. The meniscus in the bad knee did not need to be scraped. I was hoping you could tell me if Winston's was fine as well??

Man do I feel for you! What a roller coaster, and poor Winston. I was scared to see that infection was the cause of all your trauma. Is that the case? Soft tissue damage disrupted the healing/caused an injury?? Whatever advice you can give about recovery would be great. Bohdi seems to be doing well, is on Cephalexine and Tramadol and Dermaxx. We have him in a pen similar to Winston's in the living room. We fortunately do not have any stairs to deal with. He rests most of the day and seems to have no problem with mobility (at least to relieve himself in the back yard). I almost feel tempted to let him self manage a bit out of the pen, but am scared to do so.

What is your thought as far as the failure of the tightrope. Was it the proceedure itself, the infection, the soft tissue damage, the recovery was too short?? What does your vet and the surgeon opinion??

Thanks so much for any reply you can give.
    Regards
