Doing better than expected

So on Friday we let Winston try the stairs and so far so good.  He's a little limpy when he first gets up but once he walks for a little while he limps less.  Today we did a 5 minute walk and he was so happy to be off our property!    He limped a little more on the way home than he did on the way out, but still... not too bad.

  1. Thank you for your blog. I lost a dog to lymphoma on the exact same day. 4/9/11. I miss him so much.
Our other dog, Daisy, is a 7 year old 70 pound lab. She had TPLO on 12/6/11 for a partial tear in her right knee. I am starting to regret that we did the surgery as it seems to have caused other problems and now I am reading she probably could have healed on her own with therapy and conservative management. X-rays show the tear has fully healed, but she has arthritis, a possible infection at the surgery site, and a possible meniscus tear. I am very seriously considering getting the plates removed. However, I am very worried about them removing all or some of the meniscus. I am tempted to tell them not to do anything to it. She doesn't seem to be in that much pain. She is just slow to get up, not full weight bearing on her surgery leg, and less active than she was earlier in life. I've been taking her swimming twice a week and she LOVES it. She screams with excitement the whole drive over. I read another story about a dog who started doing soo much better after the TPLO explant. I am wondering if Winston's problem has more to do with the partial meniscus removal. Any advice you can offer would be appreciated. cindyharper08 (a) gmail.com

  2. I didn't want to do a necropsy to see what was going on with his leg after we put him down, but since then we have speculated that the meniscus could have torn more and his activity might have caused it to fold over on itself (and then more activity caused it to unfold). That would explain the on again/off again pain. At the same time his pain just got progressively worse over time until he just couldn't stand to be in his own body. It was probably a combination of things going on. I know that his arthritis got worse over time in addition to the meniscus problem.
