I think I'm being more careful in my monitoring of him and erring on the side of just increasing the frequency of pain pills if I see any behavior that is a little "off". So far so good; it looks like the plan is working. Winston hasn't had any more really bad days. In fact we've had some recent decent sunny days in the high 40s and 50s. I've let both dogs out into the big yard and they've been running around and having fun.
Why did you get the TPLO over the tightrope?
ReplyDeleteHow is Winston doing? I have a black lab 110 lbs, who will be having the surgery soon.
Hi Sharon,
ReplyDeleteif you have time and interest, you might want to go back to the early days of this blog, and you will see that we actually chose the tightrope surgery over TPLO. Winston has had 10 knee surgeries (including the open wound flush surgeries when his knee joint got infected after the tightrope). The TPLO was our only option after the tightrope surgeries failed.
In May it will be a year since his last surgery, and he's doing really well considering what he's been through and his size. We're able to go for walks longer than a mile and he's able to run around in the yard with Josie and his ball.
At the same time, he will be on pain pills for the rest of his life, and we have to watch him closely for any signs that his legs are more painful than "normal" for him so that we can increase his dosage and prevent the pain from overwhelming him.
